This weekend Erin and I had the awesome privilege of partnering with Habitat for Humanity to work on our church's 2006 Domestic Service Project. We spent 4 days of our Labor Day weekend (Thurs-Sun) working with the Tacoma-Pierce County Chapter of Habitat for Humanity building a house in South Tacoma. We saw 26 different people come out and help with the project, most of them from our church, some that don't even go to church at all!! We worked on framing the interior and exterior walls of the basement, laid floor joists and floor, and even started the exterior walls of the 2nd story. This was an incredibly worthwhile project for an incredibly worthwhile organization. It was a great opportunity to meet a very tangible need.Beyond that, however, I think there is more to it. I think that at the same time as we're building a house and physical putting a safe/stable roof over someone's head we are also serving the Lord Jesus. Christ said in Matthew Chapter 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.' 37 "Then the righteous will answer him, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?' 40 "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'

What an awesome truth! We NEED to remember this. That when we have an opportunity to serve the poor, the hungry, the sick, or the imprisoned it goes far beyond helping that individual and extends to serving the Lord Jesus HIMSELF.
